The Indosan Nipponji — commonly known as the Japanese Temple — is one of the most architecturally beautiful temples in Bodh Gaya. Built in classic Japanese Buddhist style, the temple is a centre of Zen practice and a haven of tranquility in the busy pilgrimage town.
The Japanese Temple was established in 1972 by the Japanese Buddhist mission Nippon-ji. The main shrine houses a large gilded Buddha statue brought from Japan, surrounded by traditional Japanese landscaping including stone lanterns, raked gravel gardens, and cherry blossom trees. The temple follows the Nichiren Buddhist tradition and welcomes visitors of all faiths. Over the decades it has become one of the most photographed landmarks in Bodh Gaya. The architecture features a distinctly Japanese pagoda-style roof structure that stands in beautiful contrast to the Indian landscape around it. Meditation sessions are open to visitors on certain days.
