About

The Vishnupad Temple in Gaya is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, built over the sacred footprint (pada) of Lord Vishnu imprinted on a rock. The 30-metre octagonal temple was rebuilt in 1787 by Maharani Ahilyabai Holkar of Indore. Gaya is especially important for Hindu death rites (pitru karma) — thousands of pilgrims visit annually to perform sraddha ceremonies on the banks of the Falgu River.

Highlights

  • 45 cm Vishnu footprint on solid rock inside the sanctum
  • Grand 30-metre octagonal shikhara (temple tower)
  • Falgu River ghats — sacred site for Hindu death rites
  • Brahma Kund — sacred tank inside the temple complex
  • Akshayavat — immortal banyan tree associated with sraddha rituals
