About
Dungeshwari, also called Mahakala Caves, is the site where Siddhartha Gautama practised severe austerities for six years before abandoning extreme asceticism and accepting a bowl of rice pudding from Sujata. The caves contain ancient shrines with images of the meditating Buddha, tended to by Tibetan Buddhist monks. The site is peaceful and relatively uncrowded compared to the Mahabodhi Temple.
